My second-grade students are sweet, kind, and caring...most of the time! During the COVID crisis, they have been allowed to return to school, but the situation is far from normal. Prior to COVID, they were allowed to run around the playground, freely interacting with others from other classrooms, playing tag, hand-clapping games, and sports where social distancing was not an issue. They got to take a break from students in their own classroom and enjoy socializing with friends from other rooms and grades in the school. While in the classroom, the children were able to sit closely together to share books, play games together, and just be kids.
At this point, my students have had to be socially distant from their classmates for nearly a year. They are not allowed to interact with students from other classrooms. They spend most of their day inside the classroom and must stay at least three feet away from their friends. Some games are impossible to play while maintaining social distance. They cannot sit together to share a single book, but must each have their own copy of a book in order to enjoy reading it together.
My students need a little help. They are starting to experience difficulties with their friends. These unusual circumstances have resulted in bickering, name-calling, and unkind words. I am asking for your help by funding a project which brings pairs of books about kindness and friendship into my classroom. Pairs of books will allow students to enjoy the same book while maintaining social distance. Materials that my students can enjoy outside together such as a large parachute with foam balls and sidewalk chalk will allow the kids to play as a class while staying apart. Seeds for our school garden will also promote fun, meaningful, friendly interactions.
