"Into The Woods" Set Design

Funded Oct 7, 2021

Thank you for the supplies given to create the trees for Into The Woods. We had a great showcase and the students got hands on experience at designing and building set pieces for theatre. The showcase at our school was an opportunity for our community members to see what we do at Coretta Scott King Young Women's Leadership Academy. We are working on getting the Arts certification for STEAM as we are currently a STEM school and this showcase was apart of that. Students were able to research youtube videos of creating prop pieces for theatre and came up with a plan to build and paint our trees from pvc pipe and cardboard. They were so excited when the materials arrived to make the trees.

There was a moment in class during painting where two groups of students made a competition on who could paint and create the most realistic tree. They asked to go outside and look at trees as a guide and really got competitive. It was refreshing to see them take on the project so seriously.

Our next project is getting the theatre upgraded with new lighting and sound equipment. The school opened in 2007 and the equipment has NEVER been replaced or upgraded. The district doesn't do upgrades and our school is located in a community that does not have a strong donation for the arts. This equipment is needed for students to perform. They deserve the same performance opportunities as their peers who attend schools in the same district on different sides of towns; and I plan to ensure that they receive it. I am so grateful for Donor's Choose and the opportunity it provides to give students the materials they need and deserve.”

With gratitude,
