After over a year of remote learning, I would love to see children leafing through real, tangible reading materials in their hands. Whether I need to mail copies, deliver copies, or have magazines in the class, students will be able to have their own copies to read and respond to. I am requesting a class subscription to Scholastic News magazine for current events in science and social studies in reading materials they can touch. We will use Scholastic News to engage in currents events through a variety of short nonfiction articles, games, discussions, and comprehension questions. Students will have articles to select from during independent reading, which promotes more leisurely reading. Furthermore, students can bring those hard copies home to share in homes that may not a literacy-rich environment. As a parent, I was drawn into the student magazine by the photographs of current events. Colorful, tangible magazines will make their way to an ELL classroom, the homeroom of second graders, and the home to a group of second graders.
