Ewa Makai Middle School eighth graders will work with college students from the University of Hawaii at West Oahu (virtually or in person) to design, maintain, and harvest a perpetual school garden, and then distribute free seedlings within the community. Through gardening, students will be able to: develop real world cultivation values and skills under the mentorship of college students, learn about sustainability through community based field trips, explore different career fields and related skills, and practice healthy choices and stress management. When students distribute free seedlings, they will share their findings with community members through the promotion of an informational website that they will create. At the end of the year, students will present a summary of their project to the University of Hawaii - West Oahu (UHWO) professors, future teachers from the College of Education, community members, and school leaders. They will also learn about and practice land stewardship by leading transitional meetings for seventh grades to take over the garden in the following year.
