The reality: In Shelby County, more than half (roughly 56%) of all children under six live in single-parent households. Another daunting reality to consider is that more than one-third (~40%) of children under the age of six in Shelby County live below the Federal Poverty Level. And if that is not sobering enough, the FPL is a mere $21,720-$26,200 for a family of 3-4 household members. Although we know that these experiences do not necessarily mean that a child will have a poor trajectory in life, we do acknowledge that these experiences greatly impact the quality of life and learning for children. Children who live in single-parent households and/or extreme poverty tend to have greater behavioral and emotional problems than children who live in two-parent or more affluent households. This in return influences the academic success of a child.
The reason: Children and adults need strategies and support to navigate the effects of extreme poverty, violence, food insecurity, and other stressors in our Memphis communities.
Breathe for Change is a wellness training program conceived by educators for educators. Upon graduation from Breathe for Change, I will become certified to lead wellness and social-emotional learning programs at my school(both for students and for other educators). This program enhances the well-being of educators, students, and greater school communities by training educators in meaningful areas of meditation, philosophy, anatomy, social-emotional strategy, and yoga practice.
With this knowledge, I will be more effective in guiding my students through social emotional strategies in the classroom and building their personal skillset in managing their big feelings as little learners. This program and training would also provide me with practical skills to help adults & staff cope with the stressors daily life, as well as secondary traumatic stress.
