Filling my classroom library with quality multicultural literature will be a resource to every one of my students in some way or another this year and for years to come. Books will be used in whole group lessons as mentor texts, in small groups during guided reading instruction or literature circles and for individual students, as all children will be able to choose a book from this classroom library for independent reading at school or to be checked out to share with their families in their homes. Culturally responsive books are a vehicle to teach students life lessons about deepening their appreciation for their own cultures as well as broadening their understanding and acceptance of the cultures of others.
