I teach fourth grade math. My classroom is made up of a variety of learners. For example, I have some students above grade level, some on grade level, and then some two or more grade levels below. In order for me to effectively teach them, I have to use something called centers/stations and differentiation. I have to group my students based on their abilities, so I can give them resources based on their needs. Currently, it is extremely difficult for my students to move around my classroom. I need more functional seating. For example, after a standard has been introduced, students will rotate through five centers. The centers are, my teacher, at my seat, technology, hands-on, and review. At "my teacher" the students will work with me in a small group. This group will be made up of 4-5 students on the say learning level. What I do with this group will be different than what I do with another group. For my high-level learners we might be adding and subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators. A mid-level group might be doing adding and subtracting mixed numbers with common denominators. A low-level group might be just adding and subtracting fractions. After about 15-20 minutes, a buzzer will go off alerting students to clean up and move to the next center. The "at my seat center" students will work independently on a task. These tasks will be different depending on what the students needs are. Just like explained in the previous station. The technology center is were students are sitting together but all working independently on some for os assignment on either iReady or Google Classroom. The hands on station is usually a game or some type of small group activity where the students are using manipulatives to practice.
