The students in my classroom have neuro-cognitive differences that make them amazing and unique! In addition, my students have diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. These differences are a strength and asset. However, these differences also mean that they have different styles and ways of learning best. Often times, schools are set up for neuro-typical students. Old Children's Literature often did not reflect and represent a diversity of backgrounds. Instead of changing my students to a neuro-typical world I want to support their differing abilities that make them unique! My students will fully blossom in an environment that supports their differences and backgrounds. Many students with "atypical" neuro-cognitive wiring have different sensory sensitivities and needs. By providing flexible seating options, my students will be able to bounce, spin, and rock their way to success! My students will feel empowered when they see themselves and their families represented in the literature we read in the classroom with a newer and updated collection of books.
