Through some string-pulling, I have gotten permission to teach Watchmen in my classroom. I have been hard at work putting lessons together, but there is one main hurdle... How do I get the text in their hands? I have researched some PDF versions, but those solutions are likely illegal, and scrolling though the endless pages of original art will immediately sap the fun and interest from the assignments. I want them to hold the books in their hands. Watchmen is so beautifully drawn, and so expertly plotted. If I am going to teach Watchmen, I think they need to experience it the proper way. I want them to turn the pages, read the prose, and enjoy the artwork the way that it was meant to be enjoyed. The overall goal here is to show them that literature is all around us, and the skills we have learned analyzing Shakespeare can be used to think more critically about the media that they enjoy and see every day. These books will help me to pass on to my students a small amount of literary fun, and help me to create a solid unit that I can use for years to come.
