Throughout the pandemic, my middle school students have experienced continued disappointment and sacrifice. As art students, in particular, the pandemic has meant canceled performances, showcases, and field trips, to name a few. Above all else, my students have missed out on opportunities for creative expression. Without their usual outlets for creativity, many of my students have experienced the past year with great sadness and disappointment. Therefore, I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to learn French while meeting their artistic and social-emotional needs. As my students return to school this fall, I believe it is essential to provide them with engaging learning opportunities as they readjust to in-person learning.
In this project, we will develop our knowledge of the French language and culture while also channeling our imaginations and artistic sides through the creation of cross-stitch pieces and songs.
Through this project, we will learn about family members, traditions, and holidays. In addition, we will also explore the Alsatian tradition of designing holiday fabrics each year. Students will then cross-stitch their own fabric designs and write songs that represent important holidays of their choosing. As a class, we will use our imaginations to showcase important information about holidays, family members, and traditions through the lens of common French cultural practices like sewing.
The arts bring tremendous benefits to classroom learning. I hope that this project will lead to fruitful discussions about French within the real-life scenario of holiday celebrations and the francophone world.
