Utilizing the Reader's Notebooks strategy, students will begin to understand the method and benefit of "reading with a pen." This journal will allow students to respond to any fiction or nonfiction text—with prompts on each page to help them take notes on vocabulary, characters, main ideas and more as they read. After reading, students use their notes to respond to high-level questions—reflecting on the author’s purpose, summarizing key details and more. A variety of writing utensils and sticky notes will be available to students, as they read, to increase engagement and comprehension. Students will also work collaboratively to bring their responses to "life" by creating murals, storyboards and/or collages.
