Libraries serve as caretakers of communities, and, as such, have implemented food literacy programs to promote health and well-being for patrons. Food-insecure students historically underutilize these types of community resources - primarily because of accessibility. Food for Thought is an effort to replicate and refine this type of outreach for use on our school campus and provide accessibility to food-focused wellness education for all students. Food for Thought works to achieve one of the goals of the Citrus County School District Wellness Committee: “To Promote Nutrition Education with the objective of improving students’ health and reducing childhood obesity.” The first goal of this initiative is to broaden access to print cookbooks and wellness materials that have a focus on affordability and sustainability. These books I have requested through DonorsChoose will be placed in our circulating collection and will be available for student check out. These books will also be used for future library programming, such as cooking demonstrations, as COVID-19 restrictions allow. Many of the titles are focused on budget and plant-based meals, which helps our food-insecure students find recipes that utilize affordable shelf-stable legumes and grains.
