Reading for ELLs
Funded Feb 9, 2022My ESL students are always excited to read with the teacher. It is wonderful to put brand new books in their hands and see that they want to keep the book. They want to take it home and share with their families. They are proud that they can read to their families, even thought, most families do not speak English. The Henry and Mudge books get students interested in reading more books in the series. I do have some available in the class library. Now that they got to meet the characters, and read the first book in the series, they all want to read the other books.
We also got to discuss how there are people who willingly give their own money to help others. This fascinated my students. Maybe it will spark some of them to give back in the future.”

Funded Aug 24, 2021My students were very excited to get these new books, especially since now many of my English Language Learners are at a reading level where they can be introduced to these book series. This gets them motivated to read more. For example, all my students love the Biscuit book series. Even students at higher reading levels want these books. Since they show so much interest, I can introduce them to the Henry and Mudge reading series.
Who doesn't love a story about a cute dog?
A good classroom library makes a lot of difference to these students.
Thank you for being part of expanding mine!”

Primary Writing Notebooks
Funded Jul 12, 2021This has been a very difficult year. It was very helpful for my students and their families that we kept the number of supplies they had to purchase to a minimum. The primary writing notebooks are very expensive. My students use them every day. I am also able to supply them with sharpened pencils. Somehow, getting a brand new sharpened pencil, motivates them to write more.
The first reading unit we are working on is called Being a Super Citizen, and you are a Super Citizen! You served as a great example of people that help in our community.”

Funded Apr 22, 2021Thank you so much for being so generous. Today, I got a big surprise to see a class set of The Lorax books. I always read The Lorax as part of Earth Day and the Conservation Unit. All my students love this book. Next school year, each student will have their own copy to take home and read to their family.
Even this year's students were excited to see these books. We got a chance to read this story again, but this time, the students did most of the reading. The last page always gets students discussing the importance of our actions.”

This classroom project was brought to life by J.Crew.American Heros
Funded Mar 3, 2021This school year, we discussed Martin Luther King and Ruby Bridges as part of Black History month. I only had a few Martin Luther King books and only one Ruby Bridges book to use with my whole class. Therefore, they did not get to take these books home. However, the students got very excited when we did get the class sets of these books. Many students were still very interested and excited to take these books home to share with their families. Although they are at higher reading level than their current level, they wanted to read theses books, and were able to since we had discussed and written about these important American heroes as a class.
Thank you for increasing our class resources. I know these book will help the students for many years to come.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sotelo
