I often think about how my students with communication and social-emotional disabilities experience this over-stimulating world. It's not easy, especially when a child has a communication impairment. I am a Kindergarten Special Education Teacher. Many of my students have both social-emotional and communication disabilities and all students would benefit from mindfulness and social-emotional learning in working toward their goals. Many of my students live in a state of "fight or flight", and often when a student is showing unexpected behavior, they are really communicating that they NEED something. Developing social-emotional skills are key for helping my students regulate their behavior and emotions to access their inherent strengths. I find myself practicing and demonstrating mindfulness strategies with my students, showing them that it's ok to learn new strategies for difficult problems and that vulnerability is ok. My students are not the only people I support. I too live and work in a system that is overwhelming and stressful, and I often get home from work feeling compassion fatigue. My colleagues and I work together to have compassion and care for one another. I'll be attending a Breathe For Change training beginning in October that will help me expand my skills in mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and yoga. Breathe For Change has created a one-of-a-kind social-emotional learning curriculum that honors the value of the teacher's own self. The curriculum will help me as a teacher focus on well-being while providing powerful mind-body wellness and SEL strategies for use with students. The learning I take away from this training will immediately help me teach students. Graduates will be certified as B4C Wellness Champions, as well as Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teachers (CYT-200). I am in need of funds to cover the cost of this program.
