Home Cooking Kits
Funded May 14, 2022Thank you so much for making this project a reality! We can’t wait to get cooking next year, and this will go a long way toward making sure our youngest students have the tools they need to fully participate in our programs. It will also help get their families involved too!”

Mr. Dan
Help Build Home-cooking Kits for the Remote Students at Our School!
Funded Mar 7, 2021Due to restrictions around Covid-19 last year, we were not able to cook in-person with our students. Cooking is a major part of the Edible Schoolyard NYC program, and we wanted to ensure that, while students were not able to cook in person with us, they would be able to do so at home.
Your donation allowed us to put together a home cooking toolkit for every student in the school--specifically, your donation went toward purchasing a child-safe kitchen knife. Every single student in the school had the ability to sign up for a kit, and we distributed several hundred of these kits!
The materials in these kits were used for multiple live remote cooking lessons over the school year, involving both students and their families.
Because not every single kit was claimed, we will be able to use the remaining materials to distribute kids to students again this year, including students that did not attend the school last year. Even though we are able to cook in person with students this year, we had such success with our family remote cooking classes, we will be continuing them again this year!”

Food Storage in the P.S. 216 Kitchen!
Funded Jun 5, 2021As we are able to return to in-classroom cooking lesson with our students this year, it was important for us to make sure that we revamped our food safety standards for our space. While we previously had strict food safety protocols, we started from the ground up on reworking those to ensure that students, their families, and their teachers would be cooking in the safest possible environment.
Your donation to this project allowed us to store food for longer, in a safer way. While this isn't a project that students enjoy directly, it allows us to keep costs down when purchasing bulk ingredients, because we can get a larger quantity that stays fresh and secure for longer!
Our first recipe for the year is a Middle Eastern salad called fattoush, and food preservation really helped us get ready for this.”

Live "Chicken Feed" Cam!
Funded Feb 7, 2021I wanted to let you know a bit about how we've been utilizing our 24/7 live chicken web camera, which was made possible by your very generous donations.
First, even though things seem to be stabilizing a bit in terms of how Covid-19 has been affecting our school, about half of all P.S. 216 students are still attending school fully remotely. While the students that attend in-person have started coming out to the garden since the beginning of April, those at home don't have an opportunity to see what's going on in the garden, especially with their favorite chickens.
After initially sharing the feed out directly with our students and their families, it became so popular that our school administration requested that we embed it right on the homepage of the school's website, www.ps216.com, so that general visitors to our site can also enjoy checking in on the chickens.
We're really glad that the chicken webcam has been such a hit with all of our students, just just the remote ones. The chicken camera will be a fixture in the garden for years to come, thanks to you!”

Mr. Dan
