If the project is fully funded we plan on doing an entire lab that is based on the nervous system where the students will get to actively participate in measuring electrical activity in the brain. They will get to learn about voltage, and the practical application of measuring a voltage differential. The students will also consider how "incorrect" electrode placement can lead to "incorrect" experimental results. Finally the 7th grade Biology students will investigate the importance of ground electrode location to the quality of neural recordings.
Before doing this lab the students should understand:
Review action potential mechanisms and the structure of neurons.
Study the anatomy of the nervous system within the cockroach leg
After doing this lab you should be able to:
Explain the concept of voltage, and what we really mean when we give a voltage value.
Describe what types of recording results would be expected based upon ground electrode placement in different locations.
Describe the method you would implement to find the best ground location for a given recording location.
