How are you feeling today? Are you "in your feels?" Do your feelings each day stay constant or change in an instant? Why are some behaviors okay at home, but not at school? As an educator, I know we should continue to focus on the education of the whole-child during our learning day! Students who need behavioral interventions often have trouble identifying and managing emotions. These skills need to be strategically taught. Social-emotional learning in an early childhood classroom can have many benefits, including changing behaviors and teaching how to identify individual emotions and the use of positive behaviors during emotional changes. Children also need to just have fun, engaging, silly storytime moments too! I use the "Behavior Basics Book Club" curriculum to teach my students to recognize and understand a variety of emotions. The books explore broad emotions such as jealousy, sadness, and anger as well as more specific "real life" scenarios like bullying, being a good sport, and asking friends to play. These stories also talk about basic skills for living in a community or family unit such as good table manners, manners in public places, using school supplies appropriately, etc. The identification and understanding of emotions and how their behavior affects others helps students make appropriate choices in a variety of scenarios. Currently, I am checking out the books from my local public library. Having a classroom set of the books will save me time and allow me to teach each book when it is convenient for my current classroom - as opposed to when I am able to access the book from the library. Thank you so much for helping my students continue to develop as kind and thoughtful citizens while also learning academics!
