  • Mental Health Managed

    Funded Nov 7, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to my mental health project for my school. I was able to provide every teacher with a calming kit for their classrooms for students to use as needed in class. Teachers were very appreciative and even wanted to use the items themselves. Students have been able to use the items purchased (stress balls, fidgets, etc) if they become overwhelmed in class; this helps them regulate so they can return to the lesson and focus.

I was able to purchase items I've had in my room for years that I know students favor and would recognize; I think this really piqued their interest too once they saw those items in their regular classrooms.

Again, thank you so much for your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kersey

  • Calm Down and Chill

    Funded Apr 30, 2021

Thank you so much for your kind donation to our school. It has been fun setting up our calming room to look more professional for our students/teachers to actually use. Today we are showing our upcoming 8th graders the room and the process to request time to use it next year if they are needing a mental break. Several of our students have loved using the room as this time of year is especially stressful with grades becoming due. I have more ideas on ways to make the room even "calmer" by adding live plants, more comfy seating, and more craft stations. This has really helped us get closer to our end goal, and it is much appreciated!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kersey

  • Escaping Emotional Madness

    Funded Feb 9, 2021

My students and myself are very appreciative of this project and its donations. We've only had our materials a week or so, but we have put them to good use already. We were able to buy lots of sensory items to help students calm down and relax when stressed such as: pastels, sketch books, a puzzle, coloring books, etc. Every student prefers something different and I'm glad we are able to meet all of their unique needs.

It has been heartening to see teenagers going back to their childlike selves. Play is crucial to development and a lot of times people forget that teenagers still need that play and sense of wonder. Even our most surliest of students has had a smile on his face using these items, which says a lot. A lot of them want to take some of these items home and create a similar space there. I've also been able to use some of these items in dealing with an upset student. We were able to go to the room to calm down and take a break; even just a change of scenery can do wonders! We also had some testing to do this week, and with the new oil diffuser on, students were more focused and ready to work. I can't wait to market this to more students and make sure they all know they have a place to calm down and be themselves.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kersey

  • Calming Down During COVID-19

    Funded Feb 1, 2021

My students and myself are very appreciative of this project and its donations. We've only had our materials a week or so, but we have put them to good use already. We were able to buy lots of sensory items to help students calm down and relax when stressed such as: play doh, kinetic sand, fidgets, yoga mats, etc. Every student prefers something different and I'm glad we are able to meet all of their unique needs.

This classroom project was brought to life by SONIC Drive-In and 5 other donors.
This year has been more stressful for our kids and teachers than years before, and most likely it will continue to be that way. We have managed to stay in school with a virtual option, however, students honestly do not know from day to day when they are going to be quarantined and have to shift to online learning. In order to make this year more enjoyable we have created a mentor Friday each week where each staff member is a mentor to a group of about 20 kids. We spend the entire day having fun, catching up on work, etc. This has helped us continue to build relationships with our in-person and our virtual students. Throughout all of this my mentor group & my students are persevering by still putting forth their best effort daily despite not knowing what changes will happen tomorrow. Even though some may seem to be thriving and resilient, anxiety and depression have been on the rise this year. Mindfulness practices can help people manage stress, cope better with illness and reduce anxiety and depression. I would like to provide a mindful space for my students and mentees to calm down when overwhelmed or stressed here at school; a place where they can take a break and get away from the computer screen. Since I'm the only counselor, a lot of times I am detained and not able to be with every student when they need me. This space would truly benefit all of our students, every day and especially on our mentor Fridays. Some items I'm including in this project such as the weighted blanket, the diffuser, the sound machine, the light machine, and the stress relief toys will be able to provide different sensory items for students as needed.
