I was teaching all 32 of my students virtually through daily live sessions, and while my students were not in the physical classroom to shop and browse the immense variety of literature in our classroom library, I was able to bring the library to them. At the end of each day, my students loved to find their "cozy space" in their homes with stuffed animals, throws, and pillows while I took them into new adventures through a variety of genres and subjects.
Now that many of my students have returned to in-person learning, they have a place to shop and browse through the classroom library each week and experience their own adventures, learn about our very diverse classroom culture, country, and the world through various stories. I also teach a small group of virtual students through live-streaming during class instruction and have maintained the "cozy space" reading at the end of the day for all of my students.
Every book in the classroom library is treated with love and care, and I know my students are grateful for the opportunity to live and walk in others' shoes through the stories that take them into different cultures, races, and others' accomplishments. They begin to realize how they fit into the puzzle of diversity. All of the books have been chosen with my students in mind, and are often suggested by my students. These particular books will continue to enhance the print-rich and growing library in my classroom.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and my students have shown an increasing interest in independent reading. This project will help enrich their experiences with the printed word and the world around them.
