These novels and resources will be used to lead riveting discussions about the American Dream and stereotypes through novel studies of each book. This will give each student a copy to be able to read from at home, so our class time can be used for discussion and application. The novels will be used to do two different novel studies in my classroom: one over "The Great Gatsby" and one over "The Outsiders." Students will read the novels, have discussions, and complete activities in relation to the book. They will finish with literary analysis and application relating the content of the classic novel to today's world and issues. In my class, we look at literature through the lens of today-what lessons can we learn from what has been written in the past? How can we do better than the characters in the novel did? What was the author's purpose, and what will we do to make it not in vain? The specific items we are requesting include enough novels for each student in my classroom to have one to check out. I also am requesting graphic novels to allow students to look at for those that are more visual. Lastly, the teachers pay teachers gift card is to purchase supplemental lessons and curriculum to enrich the novel unit. This is so much more than a novel study-it's life lessons.
