Books are the Beginning to a Better Life
Funded Aug 19, 2021My students and I truly appreciate your contribution to our classroom library. The students have been growing more interested in reading every single day. Even my previous "nonreaders" have found something to pique their interests.
Each morning, as I am welcoming students into the classroom, I begin receiving requests to read a book or hearing reviews about books they have recently read. We use the books to practice reading skills and often have discussions identifying story elements, characters (and their actions), and theme.
I am so excited to see my students' growing love of reading. So often, students are told what to read, how to read, and when to read, so it is great that they are able to take the initiative and choose to read something simply for the enjoyment of reading.
Again, on behalf of my growing readers, thank you so much for your generous gift!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Ballinger
This classroom project was brought to life by Dollar General Literacy Foundation and 12 other donors.St. Patrick's Day Classroom TRANSFORMATION
Funded Feb 1, 2021My students and I used the resources throughout the entire school day. They were able to use the materials during reading, writing, and math.
**During math the gold coins were used as counters for addition and subtraction practice. They also used them to show the 5 minute intervals on the face of a clock.
and they even used them to show the 5 minute intervals on a clock face.
**During reading, they read their new book with a partner, even acting some of the pages out for full effect.
**During writing, they used the pencils to brainstorm ideas and write a creative WANTED poster for a leprechaun.
**Culminating project was to create a leprechaun trap (their efforts were AMAZING).
When they first saw the materials, the students were so excited and wanted to begin the day immediately. They couldn't wait to see and count and read....they wanted to spend the day inside...no time for outside recess they said!
The next steps for my classroom this year is to increase my students' reading fluency and comprehension. I'm thinking....classroom library, perhaps...”
