Due to COVID-19, students stared at a screen for most of the school year. As they return to campus for face-to-face learning this year, I want bring back their excitement for school and learning. The electric tape will be used to make practice fire knife sticks as we learn about Samoan culture. The students will learn the history of fire knife dancing, make their own sticks, and learn how to spin it. The other art materials (paint palettes, watercolors, paint brushes, droppers) will be used during hands-on projects such as making paper mache volcanoes, a model of Oahu, and pottery from Mexico. Their previous teachers said they struggle to read and write. Usually my students can read pretty well by the time they come to me but since they can't, I'll have to find new resources so I'm hoping to find fun reading activities on Teachers Pay Teachers. Also, we write informative pieces and instead of giving them black and white texts about an animal, I'm hoping they'll enjoy reading books with pictures to receive information about an animal and then write about it. I know if I'm bored teaching something, then they're bored learning it. With these materials, I know I'll be excited to teach them, so they'll be excited to learn.
