  • Popping for Pop Its!

    Funded Jul 6, 2021

Thank you all for your support for my project "Popping for Pop Its." I was excited to have this funded. When my students saw the Pop Its they were excited to say the least! They wanted to know where I got them all! They told me about the ones they have seen or ones they have at home. I have used some for reading activities where we "pop" sounds/letters in words and have been able to provide some to classroom teachers to help my students deal with anxiety in the classroom. The students love these! I am exploring more ways to use these both for social and emotional learning as well as for academic activities. I love Donors Choose and the support that is given to educators. Thank you all again for supporting this and for supporting teachers everywhere!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Darch

  • Learning About Everyday Signs and Symbols

    Funded Feb 14, 2021

My project, Learning About Everyday Signs and Symbols, was funded last year and I was so excited! This was the first Donors Choose project for me. The focus of this project was to teach my students functional life skills including learning about signs they would see in their school and communities. Many students I work with need this knowledge to be successful as they get older. When I showed some of my students the Menus and the grocery store flyer, they loved them! It brought the real world into the classroom! They were excited to look for food items, write a shopping list and add their items together. It addressed so many learning targets for my students. They also enjoyed the actual photographs of signs and symbols and I was thrilled that many students knew some already and could discuss what they mean. I could use these materials for reading, writing, math skills as well as for discussions. I am so thankful to all the donors who helped my project come to life! I will share some photos too!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Darch

The materials I am requesting are based on functional concepts and life skills for my students to use in his/ her everyday life such as recognizing basic signs and symbols, reading menus and building practical math skills. These can be used in their school environment and in the community and will help foster independence. Using these materials will provide them practical experience and exposure to situations they will experience as they move through life and help them to be more independent, happy, and capable of reaching their own best personal potential.
