The students in my highly structured, therapeutic school are active and energetic, often requiring breaks between tasks or engaging rewards for accomplishments. For this reason, they have the opportunity to earn gym class every day. This often provides the motivation they need to engage in academics, as well as opportunities to build relationships with staff and to teach lifeskills. However, many of our students do not have access to proper hygiene products, such as deodorant, soap and toothbrushes, nor do they have adequate knowledge of good hygiene. These basic necessities, coupled with role models and education, will provide students with crucial lifeskills and increased self-confidence to be successful in their futures.
