In my technology class, we work on block coding using Sphero robots. Normally, we let them run wild in their classroom, but with safety precautions in full effect, I needed to adapt my lesson plans. For Grade 3, we start by doing a research project on an animal in a specific habitat (science integration). They find out things like their scientific classification, type, physical appearance, diet, habitat, predators, etc. Then, they use block coding to make their spehro turn into an "animal expert" that presents the information to the class. Each fact they write is combined with a sphero movement and light design. 4th Grade focuses on learning about the Hawaiian islands and 5th grade researches past presidents before turning their Spehros into live tour guides. These microphones would help students be able to learn outdoors while being able to safely communicate with a partner (6 ft apart). We would be able to do so many activities safely with the coding balls. I always try to integrate things they are already learning in their classes so they can get extra practice in their core subjects, while learning a 21st century skill.
