Social distancing has been challenging for students. Even though they are together in school, they often feel isolated from each other. They have been asked to stay in defined spaces with minimal room to move and have motor breaks. By providing flexible seating, students can continue to maintain safety but have the option to move some in the office setting. These stools allow students to move in a non-disruptive way, activating muscles and increasing blood flow to the brain. This can lead to better focus and improved attention, when they return to the classroom setting. For many allowing this movement can be calming and helps them self soothe. Attending a session in the social work office, for the first time, can be intimidating. Many students who are coming to the social work office this year, have never been there before. I'd like to bring a bit of joy and cheerfulness into the space by adding light covers. Currently, I have no natural light in the room and no way to manage brightness. My hope is to create a welcome space where students will want to visit. On their first visits, many students don't know what to expect or what to talk about. Talking about feelings doesn't come naturally to many, and providing a game to play which focusses on emotions, students are able to share in a fun way. I'd like to add this game into the rotation, as an ice breaker to help students begin to share in a way that feels safe and fun. This game is also easy to sanitize and can used by many.
