I was shocked when my students asked me for books as a prize. Since then, I have decided that books are not going to be a prize in an incentive program, because all of my students need books. Students are required to read every day for school, but most of them only have one or two books at home, if they have any. Although they have online access to some books, their access has limited hours throughout the week, and closes on weekends. When my student asked if they can have books, this sparked a whole conversation around books and reading. Students were so excited and said that they would be happy with any books. Since then, we have talked about what types of books interest them. After talking to students, I was able to put together this selection of books. We will be reading "Charlotte's Web" as a class. Each student will also receive an additional three books catered to their interests. I asked my students if they thought if reading was important, they all said yes. They all gave different reasons why they thought reading was important. Some examples are: "it helps you learn" and "it helps you read, and you cannot be an actor if you cannot read your script". These students are excited to begin reading new books at home, as well as practicing their skills that they will use later in life to achieve their goals.
