Being an arms length away during small group guided reading time with my reading intervention students, is crucial for providing coaching and positive feedback. Currently, I have one small round table and one rectangular shaped table that I cannot reach across to provide my early emergent readers, as well as my older 5th grade students with spontaneous coaching. Often a quick tap on a page or use of a writing surface for sight word or word families is all it takes to keep a student focused on the reading activity. The shape of this table and the markerboard feature allows me to be within reach at all times, and creates opportunities for students to jot words or ideas down quickly as we practice reading skills. I also like the coziness and more personal environment this shape of a table makes within a group. We are more focused and eager to participate when we are curved around the teacher. Feeling a part of agroup is important to struggling readers and providing a safe atmosphere gathered around a table encourages more discussion and participation.
