Last year I was able to borrow a pottery wheel from a local studio for three weeks. Younger grades were given the opportunity to help me make a very large bowl for their teacher. I was able to pull two to three students at a time in order for them to experience the making of a pot. After firing of the bowl they were able to take turns painting it with glaze. After another firing they presented their proud project to their teacher. Throughout the three weeks that I was able to borrow this wheel students in third through fifth grade were thrilled and excited to take turns in order to make their own pottery on the wheel. With assistance they centered the clay and pulled it. It was a very exciting three weeks for all of us! I was able to have them paint their piece and display it in a local art show for all to see. There are many cultural lessons I incorporate into the clay unit including Native American culture and history of clay making in ancient Greece. My students and I would be extremely appreciative if we were able to do pottery in our art room.
