With their own copies of Wilson's award winning play, students struggling with reading comprehension will see young Cory's perseverance and be inspired to be successful. Students will use the play to practice reading aloud and perform for one another. The simple set, reproduced in my classroom, will draw them into the story of Troy Maxson and the racial challenges he faces. Wilson's excellent use of symbolism will help students understand the themes of his play and identify the systemic racism in Maxson's life. Students struggling with literacy will easily see Rose's desire to surround and protect her family through the fence and Troy's refusal to build the fence as a barrier to his success. Cory, their son, has been charged with helping his dad build the fence; his struggles highlight the challenges a young man faces as he matures.
