Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of young children. Play also offers an ideal opportunity for children to express themselves while learning new skills and strengthening developing skills. Playtime and learning go together in our Pre-K classroom, our students do not even know they are learning as they move from one learning center to another. New thought-provoking, fun, and engaging toys will help facilitate learning through play. Understanding that play is one-way children learn. Play is also a way that social skills can develop. As they grow, children learn the rules of society by making up games with rules, as well as about winning and losing and “playing fair”. They also learn about controlling their impulses in order to do well at something and about space, negotiating, and problem-solving. Above all, play is needed for fun and relaxation. Social skills are needed to help children initiate and sustain positive relationships with others. The ability to play is critical not only to be happy but also to sustaining social relationships and being a creative, innovative person.
