As a result of COVID-19, our school will continue to operate remotely and in-person for the 2020-2021 academic school year. Nevertheless, after completing the first semester and analyzing benchmark data for reading, math, and science, I realized that I desperately need interactive and engaging online resources to close achievement gaps. As per recent news from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), students will complete the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness despite virtual learning challenges. Moreover, TEA is also replacing paper-based assessments for online testing, including grades third through fifth. For this reason, I must adapt my current teaching practices to reflect 21st-century learning.
Since my fifth-grade students lack executive functions such as self-control, working memory, and task initiation, student participation, and performance has decreased. Additionally, the resources provided by my district are on paper, and I am exhausted from modifying them to be interactive using Google Slides. Furthermore, purchasing engaging and interactive content from Teachers Pay Teachers can maximize the time to meet my students' emotional and academic needs.
