Online interactive teaching and learning allow students to take charge of their learning process. It gives students the opportunity to interact with knowledge and experiences beyond the classroom. For example, we have taken several virtual field trips and learned about several different cultures, we have witnessed firsthand accounts of events and stories, and we have found media content such as songs and news reports to supplement our lessons.
For my English as second language learners, online learning is advantageous because it allows them to work on the four language skills in real-time. I can assign reading passages on their reading level that they can read at their own pace, find links to vocabulary, and expand their learning with links to related content. They can listen to academic content and replay it as needed until they feel that they have grasped a concept. After reading or listening about a specific topic, my students can respond orally or in writing. They can record themselves answering the questions orally or type their answers. Therefore, getting a lot of practice in speaking, pronunciation, spelling, syntax, grammar, and punctuation.
I have seen a significant improvement in my students’ language development with the help of online interactive lessons. They also seem more motivated and eager to participate in class activities and have gone beyond the classroom with the help of online learning and electronic devices. My hope with this project is to have several electronic devices in my classroom ready for those students that, for reasons out of their control, don’t have access to a device.
