Spoiler alert: Low tech tools can yield big results for remote learning! My classroom consists of diverse learners and English language learners who need the curriculum presented with multiple modalities to make learning accessible. In our classroom, we used manipulatives, hands-on activities, videos, games, and role play, in addition to paper-and-pencil worksheets prior to school closures. Consequently, students have struggled with remote learning, even with the interactive computer activities provided. However, each student has shown a winning attitude in learning new technology with what is available in their households.
With low tech tools provided in this tech pack for use between home and school during remote/hybrid learning, students will be able to have increased access to existing learning platforms that have been difficult to navigate and a more serene learning environment to focus with less distractions. Students will be given tech pack to enhance learning between home and school, including a set of headphones, wireless mouse, mouse pad, whiteboard/eraser, and dry erase markers.
This tech pack takes lessons learned from our remote learning experience to extend low tech tools to students and meet their needs in the home environment for improved accessibility to the curriculum in all classes. For example, I have noticed that students with headphones are able to focus and drown out background noises from other siblings busy in class with competing online teacher voices, as well as using a mouse to have improved control when using apps with drawing tools to show work that would normally be written on paper. Also, a document camera would enable students to see the teacher model what normally could be seen on the whiteboard. Increased access bridges the learning divide with simple solutions.
