Music Therapy for Medically Fragile Students

Funded Jan 13, 2021

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all who donated to my project. The materials have been incredibly useful during our time learning virtually, and I am happy to report that we are also able to learn back in the classroom setting two days a week now! I was gifted enough musical instruments that I have been able to share with students to use at home during virtual class sessions, and continue the practice with them in the school building! We use our tapping sticks to practice following directions and motor planning and the shakers are used to practice stop and go.

Sensory materials are being used back in our classroom setting! With covid protocols in place, I have found that it is best to give each student their own box of materials to avoid sharing germs as much as possible. With the gift of individually packaged slimes, the students each get their own to play with over and over again! They were so thrilled to see the bright colors and explore a texture that they have not had much experience with. They have been having so much fun with the kinetic sand as well. We work on scooping, dumping, and using cookie cutters to make shapes! The kids love it and as a teacher, I love seeing the growth in their fine motor skills through the use of these materials.

As we wrap up the year, I am preparing for many of my students to transition into kindergarten. We have had a unique year to say the least, but through it all I have been blessed to work with some truly resilient little ones. On the computer and in-person, I have seen them all work hard, grow, and make progress. We will continue to use these materials to learn through play and enjoy the time that we get to have together this year!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Simon
