  • Resources for Bilingual Classroom!

    Funded Dec 8, 2021

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift! It will make a huge difference in our classroom and the kids and I are extremely grateful for your kind support. These new resources will help us create a even more fun and dynamic classroom to really inspire the kids to engage and develop their bilingual abilities across all subjects.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rivera

  • Developing Spanish Resources for Bilingual Classroom!

    Funded Dec 30, 2020

Thank you very much for your incredible donation for our classroom! I have been working hard to get resources and manipulative out to my students who do not have access to as many resources at home, and the impact has been incredible! It is so useful for these students to be able to use different modalities to explore the materials that we are covering in class. I am so excited that with your generous help, we were able to provide them some of these resources.

One highlight from the gifts we received from this donors choose package was a read aloud and partnering presentation of the book "Pasos", where we explored the lives of Rita Moreno, Fernando Botero, and Evelyn Cisneros, some famous Latinx artists that inspired many. With accompanying pictures and videos, the students were able to identify which of these icons they most identified with, and they talked about them for days afterwards! I think that these sort of resources inspiring students to follow their passions in dance, theater, painting, singing, etc. are very important to compliment the resources that we are given that focus mostly on science, history, and language arts.

Another story I would like to share was that during "El mes de la historia de la mujer" (Women's History Month), I downloaded a resource from Teachers Pay Teachers that had some incredible exercises and prompts. One was to make an acrostic poem with the letters of the word "mujeres". Two of my students stayed with me after our Spanish Homework Help club and asked if they could write a poem together. They were two girls, one African-American, and one Honduran. Together, they wrote the most beautiful poem that I would leave you with (I have added English translation in parentheses:

M: mas que mujeres (more than women)

U: ustedes son lo mejor (you all are the best)

J: justicia para las mujeres (justice for women)

E: eres una mujer y puedes hacer muchas cosas (you are a woman and you can do many things)

I know that women can do anything; without women we would not be here; always together)

Thank you for your continued support and for helping us reach our goals in our classroom!! We are eternally thankful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rivera

As a first year teacher in a dual language program in a virtual setting, my resources are very limited. My kids deserve so much more than the district is able to provide, and after getting to know them and their needs, we would greatly appreciate the materials listed. Some will be useful for virtual learning, and some will need to be sent home (for instance the Twisteez will be a great manipulative to inspire creativity and engagement with representation, and the books and kit we can use in class virtually).
