Let's Get Everybody Charged Up!
Funded Feb 29, 2024Thank you for guaranteeing that each student has a fully charged Chromebook each day. When COVID began, we started incorporating more technology into our lessons. From assignments to games to projects, Chromebooks have become essential to our daily instruction in middle school. The children have come to prefer the interactive assignments because it allows them to experience the content in a creative way and eliminates the need for worksheets. Their notes are digital, so they can be accessed at any time and won't get lost.
When the district made the decision to collect student Chromebooks and transition to computer carts in the classroom, we were told that there was no room in the budget to replace chargers that had been lost by the students. We only had enough chargers to charge half the Chromebooks in the entire middle school. This meant that not every child would have access to technology during class. That forced us to change how we instructed the students. and we had to go back to paper based learning. Any technology that we did incoporate had to be done in stages since not all Chromebooks had full power. This caused us to get behind in pacing because lessons took longer. The students and teachers became frustrated with the situation. We had access to this technology and couldn't use it properly.
Having the project fully funded was a blessing. It allowed all of our Chromebooks to be be fully charged every day for every class. We were able to use the technology how it was intended and the students were happier. Happier students meant that they were learning more and engaging in our lessons again. I can't express enough how greatful we are to you for helping us to make this a reality.”

Funded Mar 22, 2021Thank you so much for your donation. We returned to face to face instruction in April, but students were still not permitted to share materials. Coordinate grids and graph paper greatly help with developing the understanding of the concepts I was about to teach. Your donation helped get a reusable graph in each student's hand. The markers that they received at the beginning of the year were no longer working, so the new markers you gave them were much appreciated. Since they came with an eraser, it limited the number of objects the students had to carry from class to class. Despite all assignments being virtual, pencils are always needed. Some students prefer to work out math problems using paper and pencil. Being virtual for so long, most students forgot pencils when they returned. Luckily you had supplied me with plenty of pencils to give away.
Thank you so much for thinking of my students and helping me to deliver content in a more accessible way. Your generosity is much appreciated!”

Funded Jan 15, 2021Thank you so much for funding this project. Once I got my new computer, I needed certain things to make my lessons accessible. I was struggling with showing their notebook on screen in a way that they could read it. Students were having trouble reading my handwriting on screen because I was horrible at using the mouse. My wrist hurt by the end of the day trying to manipulate the cursor across two screens with my touch pad. In order to avoid having my face to face students on zoom, I needed another connector so I could make my projector a third screen.
The items purchased for this project allowed me to do all of these things, and I will be forever grateful! The very first day of using my XP-Pen my students commented on how much easier it was to read my handwriting. I was able to explain concepts better by being able to clearly draw on the screen. The document camera connected right to zoom and was so clear. I'm able to do hands on demonstrations as well as project their notebook. That connector enabled by large projector to be a third screen so my face to face kids can see my screen without being on Zoom.
This project has helped me to make the transition from all virtual to concurrent teaching. Using this technology has improved my lessons because now they are more engaging. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in making this difficult year a little easier.”

Teachers to the Rescue!
Funded Dec 22, 2020Thank you so much for making my project a reality. When I began teaching 16 years ago, I could have never imagined teaching during a pandemic. Overnight I had to learn how to teach virtually. Words like synchronous, asynchronous, Zoom, Flipped Classroom, etc began to be natural parts of my vocabulary. I was forced to become a virtual teacher when technology does not come natural to me. I spent hours in professional development trying to make sense of how this would look for my curriculum in my classroom. I spent just as many hours if not more stressed and frustrated at the situation I was now in. I needed help. I joined several Facebook groups for teachers, and learned it was important for my health to seek help and not to try and do everything on my own.
Teachers Pay Teachers is an invaluable resource that put me in touch with teachers that were much better with technology than me. They had created activities and lessons that I could use in my own classroom. Using their resources helped reduce the time I spent outside of school planning lessons. It provided me with activities that made my lessons more engaging which helped increase student knowledge. By seeing what other teachers were doing, I began to seek-out training on various programs, so I could begin to create activities of my own. My comfortably with virtual instruction improved making me a better teacher for my students.
The students have enjoyed activities such as Pixel Art, Mazes, and Escape Rooms. Times may be difficult, but Teachers Pay Teachers has helped me to create meaningful, fun curriculum and made my life so much easier. By donating to this project, you not only helped me, but also the teachers I purchased materials from. Thank you so much for your support.”

Outdated Laptop Slows Down Learning
Funded Dec 14, 2020Thank you so much for making my project a reality. At the time I submitted my project, my school was 100% virtual, and all I was given to teach was an outdated student lap top. My "teacher" lap top didn't have a web cam, and due to COVID the new lap tops that my principal ordered were delayed. Originally, we were supposed to go back to school in November, so I figured I could manage with this lap top until then. However, when it became clear that we would be virtual until well into the new year, I needed a more reliable computer. I couldn't afford one on my own, and my school wasn't able to provide me with anything better. A friend turned me on to Donors Choose, so I gave it a try. I am so glad I did, and incredibly grateful to my donors.
The lap top I was using was slow to load programs I used for my lessons. The wait time between programs slowed down instruction, and students became frustrated. I have several students that struggle with attention, so virtual learning poses a problem for them. So when you add long wait times between virtual activities, I would completely lose them. Since it was a student lap top, it had restrictions on it. I was learning about all of these great Chrome extensions to aid with instruction that were blocked by my lap top. With this new computer lessons moved smoothly, and the students were not online as long which helped them be more engaged in class. I was no longer frustrated waiting for things to load. My mood was better and it carried into my lessons. Teaching virtually was no longer a chore that we all dreaded every day.
With a faster computer, I knew I could do more things. Therefore, I began learning about new interactive programs to make learning more accessible and fun. Student engagement increased. My technical education increased. This one computer opened so many doors for me and my students. It made something that seemed so arduous, accessible. Harder concepts were able to be taught in a way that my students understood and grades began to increase for some of my struggling students. Your generosity has positively changed the learning for 60 students and one very happy teacher.”

Mrs. Hall
