Some of my students won't have the opportunity to touch a piano, or any instrument for that matter, unless it happens at school. I would love to be able to give my students this opportunity, but especially those students who will otherwise not know what it's like to play a piano.
I love the piano, but I wasn't expecting my students to love the piano just as much! They frequently ask me to play the classroom piano for them. Sometimes, they ask to play for each other, even when they don't know how. They sit in awe every time it's played. I have had general classroom teachers tell me that their students have asked about finding a piano teacher in town.
Playing the piano is a worthwhile experience in itself, but there are also many, many educational benefits for my students. With the use of these roll-up keyboards, my students could see, hear, and feel how to build musical chords. They will be able to experience half and whole steps that make up major and minor scales, and they will be able to see, hear, and play intervals between notes. They will be able to accompany themselves or others, which my students always think is very cool. These keyboards can be used for group activities or individual activities. I could seat two students to each keyboard for buddy work (but maybe not during a pandemic), and for individual or full group work, I can pull out my mallet instruments so everyone has some form of a musical keyboard in front of them.
As things are now, we don't have enough resources to teach a class using keyboards where we don't need to take turns. This, of course, means less learning. With your donations, this can change.
