Books for My Amazing 9th Graders
Funded Dec 11, 2023Thank you so much for donating "Copper Sun" by Sharon Draper. We have begun reading the novel with our 9th grade class. The novel is a compelling story told from the perspectives of an African slave and indentured servant. My students have come to really understand the trials and tribulations slaves as they were captured from their home, the journey through the middle passage, and the problems they've faced as slaves in America. It has taught them empathy and a better understanding of the cruelties of our past history. My students have really found interest in reading this book and have taken it upon themselves to continue reading beyond the classroom. We greatly appreciate this gift for our class.”

Funded May 24, 2023Thank you so much for donating to our project. With your donations I was able to browse the Teachers Pay Teachers website and find various lessons and activities for my students to enjoy and learn. TPT is a site where teachers all across the nation can post materials they've created for other teachers like me to purchase and use. I support their business and it in turn helps my teaching practice. I was ablw to get supplementary materials to add into my lessons and unit plans. Some activities I've purchased include graphic organizers, activities for characterization, and Halloween themed projects.
The materials purchased were mainly for my self- contained ELA class. This class has students reading below grade level and who struggles with literacy skills. The materials purchased helped me meet them at their level and push them to work at least two grades above. The materials were fun and very much interactive. It also connected to the time of year (Halloween/Fall) and allowed students to make connections to their personal lives. I really appreciate your help in funding my project and my students definitely appreciated it also as they were able to get new fun tasks to work on and help them learn.”

Funded Jun 29, 2022Thank you so much for all the gifts for my self contained class. Everything delivered assisted my students in the classroom with focusing, behavioral, and academic needs. The rolling whiteboard card been a perfect tool for me to use when I need to scaffold lessons and provide outlines, defined vocabulary, sentence starters, etc. for select students. The multi port outlet has allowed all my students to charge their computers so they could continue working on their assignments throughout the whole period. We can also charge their phones in a safe and secure place so that it's not a distraction during the class.
My students were so interested when they first saw the materials. I brought all the boxes into class and they were eager to help me unpack it all. This allowed students to work on their executive function and listening (to step by step directions) skills. We assembled all the materials together and they were happy to be a part of it. They were also so happy to see everything that came out of the boxes. They wanted to use each item right away.
I hung the calendar up in my classroom and it helps my students keep track of what day it is, when assignments are due and when we'll have special class events.
Our next steps are to continue using all tools to better our class performance. I can create posters to be hung around the room to provide more academic support.
We are so grateful for all the products and will continue to use everything received.”
