LEGO sets may seem like toys, but they are so much more for kids. They will continue to enhance the STEM classroom that I strive to create. My classroom is a place where my students begin learning about working with others in the real world. I give them as many design challenges as I can, but they need diverse opportunities to interact with hands-on tools to express their thinking. Believe it or not, leadership skills can be developed by working in teams to develop solutions to problems given with the LEGO activities. By having these materials, students would be able to explore engineering and designing by having the opportunity to work with others and practice their interpersonal communication skills which is also imperative as they move into our 21st century workforce. The future workplace is going to demand new ways of thinking, and human creativity is the key to it. With the opportunity to create with LEGO sets, my students will be able to choose from a variety of modalities that will allow them to watch their ideas and innovation come to life. They will also be able to collaborate and design cooperatively. The best way to build collaborative skills is to practice and experience the process, and these materials will continue to help my students grow stronger in in this area. Collaboration and creativity are highly desired skills in the workforce today. I believe it to be imperative to build this skillset in our young minds today. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in designing and exploring this year, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with design thinking.
