Reading, whether with a book in a hand or through a read aloud in distance learning, is vital for a child's social emotional and academic growth. With these books, my students will have access to a variety of literature through which they will develop their social emotional skills by seeing themselves (mirrors) and other students' cultures (windows) in the lives of the characters. I want to broaden my collection of stories where the main characters represent the diverse cultures of my students. It's a joy to see a child's face light up when they speak about a character that resembles him or herself.
Children need to read books that teach them, not only about their own lives, but those of children who are different than themselves. Children who are attending school will have the opportunity to "get their hands on " one of these good books! For students learning from home, I can share these stories, sparking conversations necessary to establish empathy and understanding. Whether students see themselves or a new friend in these books, the time spent reading will reward them with new ideas to incorporate into their future.
