Hispanic Representation in Novels
Funded Dec 8, 2020After receiving these novels, I was able to create a new class that was approved by my district for the 2021-2022 school year. Contemporary Literature will cover social issues that face Almond-Bancroft students in their everyday lives. Students will focus specifically on research and literary analysis to better enrich their understandings of the text and also their own lives. Students will engage in active and critical discussions using their novel as their anchor.
Since I was able to order many different choice novels, students will have the ability to have a "book club" style format for reading in my classroom. With a more intimate setting (smaller groups), students will be able to engage in personal and critical discussions involving the topics and themes addressed in their contemporary novels. My goal is always to make reading something the students actually enjoy participating in. I believe the development of Contemporary Literature will allow students who do not normally connect with novels, to see themselves as the protagonists and appreciate contemporary and accessible language with complex themes.
I am forever grateful for people like you who advocate for a more equitable classroom environment for all students.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Parr

Funded Jan 12, 2021Thank you so much for your generosity. I was able to purchase Spanish translations of the novels in our current curriculum for our EL students to use. I am so appreciative. The students will begin to use these novels as early as next semester. They are excited especially to be able to read Hunger Games in Spanish.”
