Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We currently are reexamining what we teach, our purpose for it, and the impact it has on ALL of our students, most of whom are being under-served. As an ELA teacher, I and my department are attempting to recenter our curriculum on literacy and literature for students of color to create a more meaningful, impactful curriculum. We aspire to increase engagement, give all students an authentic voice, and elevate the experiences of all our kids. This project is the first step in a right direction to correct our course during these revolutionary times in America.
