Optimal Virtual Learning Experience

When I started teaching early childhood seven years ago, I never imagined that technology would be the sole medium through which I would reach my students. The thought of students not being able to physically play, use manipulatives or interact with their peers was heart breaking, but this heart break did not change the reality of the current state of schooling. The pandemic has forced me to become more creative, more tech savvy, and more reliant on a functioning device every single day during instruction. The desktop has allowed for me to teach my kindergarten classroom of 20 students guided reading, writing and phonics. The biggest challenge was being able to see student work to provide support and feedback as students used various writing materials, pencil and paper being the trickiest. The large screen maximized visibility and the additional device allowed me to be in two zoom spaces at once, this contributed to the successful rotation of small groups where students are able to receive individualized instruction. With consistent student work samples and being able to provide feedback, my students are on track to meet end of year benchmarks that were set for in person learning. Thank you isn't enough.”
