Ocean acidification reduces the amount of carbonate, a key building block in seawater. This makes it more difficult for marine organisms, such as coral and some plankton, to form their shells and skeletons, and existing shells may begin to dissolve. With this project, I will help my students to understand better the process of acidification of the oceans. pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water. Since pH can be affected by chemicals in the water, pH is an important indicator of water that is changing chemically.
