Every week, students engage in a critique of a new piece of art by a global artist. So far we have studied works from the Maori people in New Zealand, the Kongo peoples of Africa, and contemporary artists from Mexico, China, Australia, and the United States. I expect my students to make connections in their own work by relating to the artist of the week. In the process of coming up with their own ideas, the students plan what the project will look like, the materials they will use, and the themes for their piece. They are often asked to provide at least 3 sketches of their ideas before committing to their final draft. Having these sketchbooks will allow students space to experiment and bring their ideas to life. Students have gotten resourceful by drawing on the back of cereal boxes and junk mail. I have already been blown away by students' resilience when coming up with solutions to create, but it's my job to empower them to do their best. These materials are just a small part of that. Thanks for supporting our artist community!
