The Girl with Seven Names tells the riveting story of a 17-year-old girl and her family’s escape from North Korea. Now a human rights activist and famous author, Lee Hyeon-seo continues to help North Korean families seek refuge in other countries. This memoir is an excellent choice for North Marion High School’s new book club because it expands student knowledge of global challenges, encourages students to continue reading and discussing books of various genres, and facilitates discussion on the importance of human rights activism. The students involved in the book club researched, voted, and chose this book out of genuine curiosity and a desire to learn. If we receive funding for this book, it will serve as a more contemporary piece of literature that deals with themes including, but not limited to: the importance of self-identity, the dangers of propaganda, the power of family and kindness, and the struggles of dealing with prejudice against North Korean people. This memoir may also be taught in conjunction with Lee Hyeon-seo’s TED Talk, which received over 12 million views in 2013.
