The weather affects everyone daily; from clothing choices, outdoor activities, and even how you feel. The materials provided through this grant will allow my students to track and observe weather patterns throughout the year. My students will embark upon a cross curricular learning experience in January. The science unit will guide students to discover how seasonal weather patterns affect their lives and the world around them. The writing genre for this unit is poetry. What better combination of learning is there than to write about what you are learning about? Second grade writers will observe mentor texts and borrow craft writing skills from master authors that present the elements of writing. Texts such as Tap, Tap, Boom Boom, Little Kids 1st Big Book of Weather, When Green Becomes Tomatoes, and Oh Say Can You Say What's the Weather Today? will be provided through the grant and offer students mentor texts to use and model their writing after. The mentor texts will be added to our classroom library to enhance vocabulary for years to come. Science content on the weather, fiction and nonfiction books that enhance vocabulary on the topic, and an opportunity to use what they have learned in a creative outlet such as poetry will come together to enhance my students learning experience.
