My students read for 20 minutes daily in class to improve reading stamina and foster a love of learning and literature. Using the workshop model, I teach a mini-lesson using our core text (currently "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds), and then students apply their skills to the AIR (Accountable Independent Reading) book they have self-selected. Students have set reading goals for the year and keep track of their reading through a daily reading log. They are always so excited when it is time to pick out a new book. However, with my students in cohorts, not all of my students are able to look through our full classroom library. I bring the books into my other classrooms using a cart. All students browse our books with their eyes, and can only touch the book that they have selected after they have used hand sanitizer. The hybrid/cohort model also means that books need to be "quarantined" after they are returned. I have to sanitize each book before it can return to the classroom library. Between the cohorts, hybrid learning, and book quarantine, there are not many books to choose from. I have created this project so that my students have more choices of diverse, engaging, and important books to select from. I want my students to see themselves in their books, and that is why I have selected books from diverse authors, voices, characters, and subject matters. I truly need your support to make this a reality!
