First Grade Classroom Essentials
Funded Jan 13, 2025In a first-grade classroom, simple supplies like hand sanitizer, pencils, Sharpie markers, and Band-Aids have a big impact on students' learning and well-being. These items may seem small, but they play important roles in keeping the classroom running smoothly, helping children stay healthy, organized, and ready to learn.
Hand sanitizer is a must-have in any first-grade classroom. Young children are still learning how to keep their hands clean and practice good hygiene. Germs can spread quickly when students are playing, sharing supplies, and working together in small groups. By using hand sanitizer regularly—especially before snacks, after recess, or when sneezing and coughing—students can help prevent the spread of illnesses. Fewer students getting sick means fewer absences, which leads to more consistent learning and participation. Hand sanitizer encourages healthy habits that not only benefit individual students but also the classroom as a whole.
Pencils are one of the most basic and important tools in first grade. At this age, children are developing their handwriting, practicing spelling, and solving math problems. Having sharpened pencils available allows them to complete their work without delays. Because pencils frequently break or wear down, keeping a steady supply ensures that students stay focused on learning rather than searching for a writing tool. It also teaches responsibility as students learn to care for their supplies. Pencils may be simple, but they are essential for helping young learners practice the skills they need to grow.”
